Hi there! It's time for another set of idioms beginning with "s." Enjoy!
"Stick to one's guns."
To hold firm to one's beliefs or views; to stand up for one's rights; to not give up.
自分の立場[信念]を守る.
"Straight from the horse's mouth."
From a reliable source.
直接本人から、かなりの信用できるところから.
"Strike it rich."
To suddenly become wealthy.思いがけなく大金を得る.
"Strike while the iron is hot."
To do something at the best possible time,
to take advantage of an opportunity that is presented.
鉄は熱いうちに打て。/好機を逸するな。
That's all for the "s" section in our study of common English idioms.
Next week we'll move on down the alphabet and see what "t" has to offer.
Have a good week!
TIP: Find the time of day when you are most alert,
and try to study some then.
Even a few minutes of studying or reviewing when your brainpower is
at its best could be better than an hour of trudging through a book or
notes when you're tired.
