Hi, folks! This week we'll continue working our way through the letter "T,"
as we learn more idioms that will add spice to your English.
"Talk shop." To talk about business matters at a social event.
所かまわず商売の話をする.
Eg., "It's not appropriate to talk shop at a holiday party."
"Talk until one is blue in the face."
To talk until one is exhausted or out of breath.
疲れきって口もきけなくなるまで話し続ける / とことん話をする
.(通例、努力が無駄に終わったときに使われる表現)
Eg., "Karen talked to Joe until she was blue in the face,
but he still stood fast to his position."
"Thank one's lucky stars." To be thankful for one's (good) luck.
幸運に感謝する.
Eg., "I thank my lucky stars that I found a great husband."
"Think on one's feet."
To think while speaking; respond quickly to new developments.
すぐに決断する.
Eg., "A PR spokesperson must be able to think on his or her feet."
"Through thick and thin." Through good times and bad times.
どんなことがあろうとも.
Eg., "A good friend stands by you through thick and thin."
TIP: Find a public presentation or speech being done in English on
a topic that interests you,and attend!
Not only is it a great way to practice your listening comprehension skills,
but you may also make a new friend or acquaintance whom you can meet with again!
And the more you practice your English, the better it will get!
